Actually I think that this piece of music might be on a CD. The sound on my webpage is from a midi file downloaded from a free site over the internet. The song is called Up On The Roof. Criticmann will know the artists who first performed it (I am thinking a Motown group but I am not sure).

Thank-you very much for you kind compliments. I will try in the next few days to find a way of getting the midi music to you on one of the pages here so that you can download it to your computer.

As for what Soiree and I talk about. First of all, we never talk to each other in front of the dogs. Soiree and I have known each other a very long time and our understanding of each other is so deep that we frequently do not need to speak to each other to understand each other. Most of the time I talk more to the humans than I do to Soiree. I let them know if my food dish has become empty with a kind of insistant loud "Mmrrrrowwww." I let them know when I want them to pet me (which is all the time) with a Mrrrrrrraaaah? This is also the call I use when I am wondering around the house trying to see if anyone is home but me. I am also very vocal when I catch a mouse and I want everyone, Soiree and the humans to come see it. The call that I use then is very similar to the one a momma kitty uses to call her kittens. Then when the other cat, who lives on the same property, Isabella, comes into our house I scream Rrrrrrraaaahhh. Soiree, who is usually very silent and terse will also shriek in much the same way when Isabella sneaks in. And in this instance, we spread our tails out as huge as we can make them. When Soiree does speak she has a very tiny voice which sometimes sounds like she is squeaking. She is very very old though so some of that might be her advanced years. Mostly, we spend our time curled up next to each other on the big director's chair next to the heater, licking each other and dreaming. I like to go outside though for a bit each day so that I can enjoy watching and smelling things in the nice enclosed garden.

Dear Kali, Thank you for telling me about your discussions with Soiree and your humans. It sounds like you have a wonderful house, especially your enclosed garden. Is that where you catch most of the mice? Is Isabella still trespassing? What does she do when you and Soiree get upset? If your mistress is home, does she chase Isabella away? So nice to hear from you. No question is too personal, I will answer all.

Yes, I am female as is Soiree. Isabella is female too but she is not really a member of the household. The mistress does chase her out of the house when she sees her inside because it upsets us so much but I can see Mistress pet Isabella in the garden sometimes when she thinks that I am not looking. Isabella actually lives with Cindy. When we catch her in the house and start shreiking she usually leaves right away especially since we are at her tail.

As for the mice, I catch them inside and out of the house. There is so much to eat in the garden that mice and rats seems to live in every little nook and cranny. I will spend many an hour in the garden sitting next to a hole that I think might have a resident. The rats, I ignore them. One time a skunk came into the house and was eating right out of our food dish. Soiree and I chose to ignore the situation. Lindsay catches the rats, another distasteful situation. When I catch the mice I usually start calling loudly for everyone to come see. Once the mouse stops "playing" though, I usually just leave it in the house somewhere in the living room. Once the mistress stepped on one in barefeet on her way to the kitchen. As soon as the mistress sees it she throws it away. In the beginning she gave them mouse burials but I do not know why she stopped. Soiree has never killed anything. She usually just likes to watch anything that moves. Most of her days are spent astral projecting. Right now we have a special perch in the garden that we can sleep on during the day. Yes all is well with us on this end. Dear Kali, Hi! Thank you for answering all. Oh, your garden sounds so idyllic; I picture an English garden in the countryside with lots of heather (and mice and rats and skunks!). You know, I am a British Blue cat (even though some humans crudely refer to me as an "alley" cat) on my father's side. Do you know anything about your heritage? Thank you for tellling me about how you present your mice to your mistress; this is helping me with my research. Some animal behaviorists hypothesize that cats present their humans with their prey as a result of maternal instinct--the cat perceives the humans as its kittens. I am collecting data which refutes this claim, because, even though I am a female cat, when I present humans with something I've caught (even if it is only a big bug), I am giving it to them as a gift of love. I understand that many male cats also proudly present their humans with prey, and I doubt that they are feeling very maternal. Do you have any ideas on this? Thank you. Dear L.T. Kali asked me to come on and write to you she is in steady meditation on the mouse at the moment and she thought that my first hand experience might help. First. let me say that your research sounds fascinating. I can tell you my own experience with my two sons. I had three, that litter two male, and a female. The two males were sleek shiny black short-hairs and the female was a solid white short hair...The one son looked like his father and the other son looked like me only sturdier, sleek and long and lanky, although now I am ....more mature. I saw their father one day in front of the apartment building where my mistress used to live. I ran to him in joy and called my greeting. He hissed at me and knew me not. I staggered sideways. The mistress saw this. I saw the sympathy in her eyes for me. But it was a lesson quickly learned. The mistress picked me up and held me in her arms and I knew that I was loved so I changed my attention to other things. Anyway, of the two males, one was a hunter and one was not. Sabaka was the hunter. He would bring in gophers and evicerted them in the bathtub. He would leave them about the house is various mangled postitons. Necho, his brother was more tender. One time we saw him jump into the house through the window with something in his mouth. Many times we had seen Sabaka jump into the house this way with some fresh caught prey in his mouth. But here was Necho who never caught anything. We all drew closer to see what it was. Necho dropped an acorn from his mouth and it fell to the kitchen floor. Then he batted it with his paw and chased after it as it sped away. We all looked at each other human and animal alike. The female of that litter was the only cat I have ever seen making love in the missionary position or as close to that as the anatomy of two cats would allow. And she only hunted occassionally. With Sabaka who hunted three or four times a week and actually ate much of the prey it seemed like he did not bring the morsels into the house so much to share with either other cat or human but more like any predator bringing the prey into the cave to consure it at its leisure. Sometimes the humans would wake up and go into the bathroom only to let out a shriek when they saw the tub was stained with blood. Sabaka would bring the prey into the tub since it could not get away easily from there. Now with Kali, she likes me to help her catch it but once it is dead we both time of it and leave it wherever it fell, perhaps batting it with out paws a few times first to make sure that it is not still moving. Kali gets praised for catching mice since it is kind of a job that she can do to help the household. So the immediate benefit that she seems to recieve from it is the joy of the hunt, then leaving the food in the cave, yes it is like a gift in that if there were young ones, or old ones, or hungry kitties here then there would be a snack for them. Kali does enjoy being praised for being a good huntress and that seems to be an immediate benefit too. Dear Soiree, Thank you for sharing some of the history of your fascinating life with us. Have you thought of writing an autobiography? Your children sound like wonderful cats. Do they live nearby? The information on the hunting habits of Sabaka and Necho was very helpful. Yes, I think being praised by our humans when we present them with prey reinforces that behavior. I enjoyed hearing about the various practices of Kali and your sons when and where they present their prey. I know of a male cat who presents his humans with gophers and mice, and after they praise his hunting skills, he eats the mice, leaving only the entrails. I think he must be very smart, for in this way, he would avoid being poisoned, should the mouse have ingested anything toxic. By the way, Kali mentioned that you are perhaps of Egyptian descent. Dear L.T., Yes I know of another male cat who eats everything but the entrails as well. The humans who like in the house seem to enjoy making conclusions about the cat's state of mind based on what was eaten, what was left, and how it was arranged and where it was left. It was almost a kind of divinitory game for them.

P.S. I am starting to worry about Kali. She spends all of her time perched on the arm of the couch looking at the little mouse. I hope the Mistress releases it soon. Oh L.T., I seem to be recovering from my obsession with that juicy, delectable, tender mouse. And I have returned to my place on the chair beside Soiree. The dog, Holland, had been coming into the house a bit more lately because of the cold outside and I have had to keep my eye on it too. Last night, and I knew that dogs were capable of this, Holland, started ripping pages out of the dictionary. I do not know if she was trying to get crib notes since she heard the Mistress saying that she would have to go to dog school or what. I do know that she ripped out a page that said "highroad" at the top, I think that the Mistress took it as a sign.

Dear Kali, Oh, I am so relieved that you have weaned yourself from the mouse. Has your mistress released it yet? Do you think you could find that very same mouse and bring it back? The reason I ask is, many years ago, I was a great huntress, and I brought my humans huge, buzzing beetles and other insects, and they always shrieked in delight. One night, I brought in a cricket, and, after praising my prowess, the humans took the cricket outside and put it in a huge, vine-covered area. Somehow, in the midst of that dark, jungle,I was able to locate the same cricket, and I brought it back into the house. We repeated this episode several times, and it became a fun game like "Doggie, Doggie, Where's Your Bone?" (I guess it should be "Kitty, Kitty, Where's Your Mouse!") So, I was wondering if you and Soiree have this ability, and if so, do you think it is peculiar to cats? What makes us able to do this? Is it our keen sense of smell? Thanks! Take good care. Whew! Double trouble here! I caught another mouse. I was having such a good time and suddenly there was the Mistress. (Soiree had ever dome down from her chair to watch.) The mistress took this new mouse away from me too and placed it in the aquarium with the other one.

The story that you relate about the cricket is amazing, how dear. How did you know that it was the same cricket?

No Soiree and I have not done this that you describe.It sounds like you hae a very very good sense of smell though L.T. I do catch though. If the Mistress throws a ball (small fuzzy) I will run and get it and bring it to the Mistress. (The Mistress is good at finding things thought and sometimes it seems like and extra sense.)

As for the Mistress writing a book about me or Soiree, I will suggest that to her, thank-you for your excellent suggestion. It the meantime, I will be watching the mice. What about you L.T.? You are such and attractive female that many would love to look at pictures of you plush double coat and see what you have to say on feline liquistics as well as the sociology of cat?

Dear Kali, How exciting for you to have two mice to obsess over! One for you and one for Soiree? What a skilled huntress you are! In answer to your question, I do not know how I knew it was the very same cricket--I just sensed it, I guess. The humans are the ones who identified it as the same cricket, because it was the same size and color, and each time I happily presented it to them, they seemed to feel sorry for it because it was less mobile than before. Thank you for your suggestion and your compliments about my plush double coat. Did you know that my dear Auntie and one of my humans wrote a series of short stories about me called "The Adventures of Little Tiny?" They didn't have a talented artist like your mistress to do any illustrations, so it is just text. There are about four stories, several with a holiday theme. Oh L.T. Sorry I have been gone so long. The Mistress has been very busy getting adjusted to the new job. She is really a creature of habit, like myself, and likes everything to be familiar. i have been feeding a family of six ferile cats for about a year and a half. my husband and i just purchased a house and are going to move. i've contacted rescue organizations who tell me that we can't transport the cats b/c they'll just run when released unless i can confine them for a time while they get used to their new environment. the new house is small and i have no place to confine them. i also have two indoor cats which don't go outside as well as a dog so i couldn't bring these cats inside, even though i've tried to lure them inside at times to see if they'd take to a new environment. the rescue organizations have told me to cut back slowly on feeding them so they get accustomed to fending for themselves again. my heart goes out to them and i don't know what to do. i also don't think my new neighbors would appreciate me bringing six stray cats. what are your thoughts on this. please email me at lpoter01@yahoo.com. i thank you for your time.

I had a Siamese (named Salome) and she died of cancer about a year ago. I have her ashes in an urn by my bed with a picture of her on it. I kiss her every morning when I get up and kiss her before I go to bed. I have a picture of her lounging on my bed on my desktop. Hello, I am sorry to say that I am closing this part of my larger web pages. The new spambot programs make it impossible for me to tend all my pages. The spammers come in and dump about eight links. That really adds up when there are hundreds of spammers dumping stuff into these webbots. It makes them crash. It was fun to keep these pages open and see who might drop by but now I can't do it or it makes my whole program crash. Best Wishes to all you dear cat lovers out there. :)
