Interview with Roni Zulu of Zulu Tattoo

Interview with Roni Zulu of Zulu Tattoo Studio, L.A., California

As interviewed by Jennifer Turner and Victoria Vaughn-Perling on November 1997 Los Angeles, California

J.T. - So we are just going to ask you some pretty standard questions to see who you are and where you are coming from kind of thing, and the first one is who do you consider to be your main influence?

Roni Zulu - Art wise? General Wise?

J.T - General and Tattoo wise?

V.V.P. - You said that you were also doing a comic, tell us about that?

Roni Zulu - The comic is about post apocalyptic Los Angeles

V.V.P Cool!

Roni Zulu - basically the quick scenario is that

the big earthquake hits, it separates the continents which creates and island because of all this chaos, the race wars happen and it is just total madness and then up from that rises the one world order which is a supremacist group who have outlawed just about everything everything that is free: interracial relationships, homosexuality, the arts is all outlawed and there is this group of underground artists that live under Los Angeles and it is about their struggle against the one world order.

V.V.P. - Gee, this all sounds like something that could happen so easily.

Roni Zulu - it got a lot of tattooed and pierced people cause in the comic piercings are now more functional, like ear peircings have radio transmitters, the air is so bad because of the pollution septum piercings are actually breathing apparatus that have certain mechanism that allow you to breathe. It is all pretty trippy so it is pretty interesting.

V.V.P. - Sounds great do you have a copy?

Roni Zulu - I have some rough drafts and now I am starting to draw it all out

V.V.P. - so you are at the stage where you are going toward publishing it?

Roni Zulu - I have just written it, now I am going to draw it all out and from there I am going to see what happens.

V.V.P. - Can we go out into the light so that I can take some pictures of you in front of your store, and I can get some parts of your body, I see that every part of you has been modified in some way.

Roni Zulu - Yeah, no problem!
